Hopi Blue Corn

Garden Seeds

Hopi Blue Corn is a beautiful heirloom corn long associated with the Hopi people, who have grown and valued blue corn for generations. Known for its deep blue kernels and strong garden presence, this variety brings together beauty, history, and real kitchen use in one plant.

This is a flour corn, traditionally dried and ground into blue cornmeal for breads, tortillas, and other dishes. In the garden, it grows tall and sturdy, making it a rewarding choice for backyard growers who want something both practical and meaningful.

Hopi Blue Corn does best in full sun and warm soil. It is especially rewarding when planted in blocks for strong pollination and allowed to dry fully on the stalk before harvest.

Planting Tips:

  • Start: Direct sow outdoors 1 week after last frost, once soil reaches at least 60°F
  • Depth: 1″ deep
  • Spacing: 8–12″ apart
  • Germination: 5–6 days
  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining soil amended with compost or organic matter

Keep plants evenly watered and mulch to help with weeds, since corn does not compete well early on. Plant in short blocks rather than one long row to improve pollination and help the ears fill out well. Ears can be left to dry fully on the stalk, or finished indoors if rainy fall weather sets in.

A beautiful ornamental corn that can also be ground into blue cornmeal or enjoyed fresh. Great for heritage gardens, edible landscapes, and backyard growers who want something both useful and eye-catching.
