Butterfly Weed

Garden Seeds

Butterfly Weed is one of the most eye-catching flowers you can grow, with blazing orange blooms that bring bold color to the garden. A favorite for Monarch butterflies, it thrives in dry, rocky, or sandy soil and does especially well in sunny, well-draining spaces.

This hardy perennial attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while holding up well in heat and drier conditions once established. Deer tend to leave it alone, which makes it a strong choice for pollinator gardens, native borders, and lower-maintenance backyard spaces.

Butterfly Weed takes a little more patience than faster-growing annuals, but it brings lasting value to the garden. Over time, it becomes a reliable source of color, pollinator activity, and biodiversity that helps the whole space feel more alive.

  • Planting Tips:
  • Start: Sow outside in late fall, or chill the seeds in the refrigerator for 30 days before planting in spring
  • Depth: Sow just below the soil surface
  • Spacing: 12–18″ apart
  • Germination: Spring after winter chill, or after 30 days of cold stratification
  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: Rocky, sandy, or well-draining soil

Once established, Butterfly Weed is drought tolerant and prefers drier conditions. Young plants should be watered until established, but overly wet soil can damage the roots. This plant does not like transplanting, so direct sowing is best.
