Cosmic Purple Carrot

Garden Seeds

Pulling carrots is already one of the most satisfying parts of the garden, but Cosmic Purple makes the reveal even better. These long, slender carrots develop deep purple skin around a bright orange center, bringing unexpected color to the garden and the kitchen.

The flavor is sweet with a slightly spicy edge, making these carrots just as good eaten fresh as they are roasted, sautéed, or added to a colorful plate. They can also be harvested young as baby carrots or left in the ground to reach a larger size.

Cosmic Purple is an open-pollinated, cool-season variety that grows best in loose, deeply worked soil. For a steady supply, gardeners in cooler climates can sow additional rows every few weeks through the growing season.

Planting Tips

  • Start: Direct sow about 3 weeks before your last expected spring frost, or once soil reaches about 45°F
  • Depth: ¼″ deep
  • Spacing: Thin seedlings to 2–4″ apart
  • Germination: Keep soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge
  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: Loose, deeply worked, well-draining soil

Plant Care

Keep the soil evenly moist and weed carefully while plants are young. Thin seedlings once they reach about 2″ tall, giving roots more room if you want larger carrots. If the tops of the carrots begin to emerge above the soil, cover them lightly with mulch. Harvest young for baby carrots or allow them to mature for longer, fuller roots.
